Universidad Tepak Paphos – Acoustic Solution with Acoustic Islands in Cyprus (2023)

The project developed for Tepak Paphos University in Cyprus in 2023 represents an acoustic intervention designed to improve sound quality and environmental comfort in a contemporary educational setting. In universities and higher education centers, acoustics are a fundamental element in fostering concentration, communication, and the well-being of students and teachers, especially in high-intensity and high-occupancy spaces.

In this intervention, Ideatec Advanced Acoustic Solutions implemented a system of Acoustic Islands, a suspended solution designed to optimize sound absorption and reduce reverberation in large, open interior spaces. This type of system significantly improves the acoustic behavior of classrooms, common areas, and collaborative spaces without interfering with the original architectural design.

The architectural project was developed by Eraclis Papachristou Architects, opting for a modern, functional, and luminous university architecture where spatial flexibility and user well-being are part of the building's global concept. In this context, the incorporation of suspended acoustic solutions allowed for the maintenance of visual spaciousness while enhancing acoustic performance.

The main challenge of the project was to control the reverberation generated by large reflective surfaces and open spaces, which are common in contemporary educational buildings. The accumulation of ambient noise in these environments can negatively affect speech intelligibility and concentration capacity, making the incorporation of effective acoustic solutions essential.

The Acoustic Islands installed by Ideatec act directly on sound propagation, absorbing a portion of the acoustic reflections and creating a more balanced and comfortable environment. In addition to its technical features, this system provides added aesthetic value thanks to its lightweight, suspended design, which helps create dynamic and visually appealing spaces.

The project, located in Cyprus, reflects the growing importance of integrating advanced acoustic solutions into university buildings oriented toward new learning methodologies and collaborative work. The intervention notably improves the daily experience of users, promoting spaces that are quieter, more functional, and adapted to the current needs of the educational field.
