Solutions for noise pollution in work and leisure spaces

Noise pollution doesn't always come from the street. Offices, restaurants, and classrooms generate their own noise, and the solution there isn't to reduce the source but to change how the sound behaves inside.

When we talk about noise pollution, we almost always think of traffic, construction, or nightlife as seen from the street.

But much of the noise that affects people every day is generated and suffered indoors: in the office where no one can concentrate, in the restaurant where you have to raise your voice to order, in the classroom where students in the back rows miss half the lesson.

This indoor noise has a solution, and it doesn't always involve reducing the source.

What Is Acoustic Pollution and Why Does It Also Occur Indoors?

Acoustic pollution is the presence of noise levels that disrupt the normal conditions of an activity. Outdoors, it affects rest and coexistence. Inside a building, it affects something equally measurable: the ability to work, communicate and learn.

The difference is that indoor noise is rarely perceived as an acoustic problem. It is perceived as tiredness at the end of the day, as a meeting that fails to achieve its objectives, or as a venue that customers leave earlier than expected.

Three Different Sources That Require Different Solutions

Noise Coming from Outside

Traffic, construction work and street activity. These are addressed through the building envelope: windows and doors, glazing and façades. This is not the field of acoustic conditioning.

Noise from Building Services

HVAC systems, ventilation, lifts and machinery. These problems are addressed at the source through enclosures, vibration isolation and proper maintenance.

Noise Generated Within the Space Itself

Conversations, keyboards, tableware, chairs and footsteps. This is the most common type of noise in offices, hospitality venues and educational facilities, and it is corrected by treating the surfaces within the room. This is where acoustic conditioning comes into play.

Confusing these three sources is the most common mistake. Replacing the windows in a restaurant will not reduce the noise generated by its own customers.

Why Reducing Reverberation Lowers Perceived Noise Levels

In a space with hard surfaces, sound bounces repeatedly before fading away. Each conversation adds to the tail of the previous ones, causing the background noise level to rise.

When the background noise level rises, people automatically raise their voices to make themselves heard.

This increases the background noise even further, and the cycle repeats. This phenomenon is known as the Lombard effect and explains why a crowded restaurant can become unbearable even when nobody is consciously shouting.

Introducing sound-absorbing surfaces breaks this cycle. By reducing reverberation, the background noise level decreases, people no longer need to strain their voices, and the space becomes more comfortable and functional without anyone having to deliberately make less noise.

Solutions According to the Type of Space

Offices and Workspaces

The objective is twofold: reduce the overall noise level and limit sound propagation between workstations.

The approach combines ceiling absorption, as this is the surface with the greatest impact in an open-plan floor, with vertical elements that reduce the distance over which a conversation remains intelligible. Acoustic pods provide a targeted solution for calls and short meetings where greater acoustic privacy is required.

Restaurants and Leisure Spaces

Hospitality venues bring together almost every adverse factor: hard surfaces required for hygiene and maintenance, high occupancy density, music and noise generated by the service itself. Treatment usually focuses on the ceiling and sections of wall at conversation height, using materials that can withstand intensive use while integrating seamlessly into the interior design.

A good example is the The Silent Chapel restaurant within the Iris Cerámica space at Casa Decor 2026, designed by Raúl Martins Studio. It was a restored chapel, with all the hard and reflective surfaces that this entails. The solution consisted of customised Ideaflow Double PET panels with a travertine-effect finish, integrated into the project's material language.

The space retains its original character while gaining something equally important: the ability to hold a conversation comfortably.

Classrooms and educational spaces

In a classroom, the problem is not simply noise; it is comprehension. A high reverberation time reduces speech intelligibility and particularly affects students sitting farther away from the teacher, younger children, and those with hearing loss. Ceiling treatment offers one of the best relationships between cost and performance.

Common areas, lobbies and corridors

These are often high-ceilinged spaces with large amounts of hard surfaces and little acoustic treatment. They act as resonance chambers and transfer noise to the rest of the building. Partial ceiling treatment is often enough to contain it.

What acoustic treatment solves — and what it doesn’t

It is important to be clear about its scope, as misaligned expectations can lead to unsuccessful projects.

Acoustic treatment addresses how sound behaves within a room: it reduces reverberation, lowers the background noise level and improves speech intelligibility. It does not prevent sound from passing from one room to another or from entering from outside. That falls under a different discipline: sound insulation, which requires different construction solutions.

In practice, many spaces need both. The important thing is to identify the actual problem before deciding on the solution.

How to check whether it has worked

The results can be measured. Before any intervention, the room’s reverberation time is measured in its current condition and, where appropriate, the sound level under normal operating conditions. After the intervention, the measurements are repeated under the same conditions.

Beyond the figures, there are indicators that users notice immediately: being able to speak without raising their voice, meetings that no longer require people to repeat themselves, and staff finishing their shifts feeling less tired.
